Jackie sat back in the desk chair the hotel provided and rubbed her gritty eyes. The clock on the lower right side of her laptop screen read 3:34 AM. And she still hadn’t found the blasted mole.

She knew she needed her rest. The doctors told her that more than once. But her brain simply wouldn’t turn off. She’d given up trying to sleep after tossing and turning for an hour. The queen-sized bed mocked her as she sat there.

This would have been nothing a few years ago. Then she could pull an all-nighter fueled by Red Bull and sheer determination. Now? The thought of Red Bull made her feel ill and her body cried for some respite.

Well, her body would have to tough it out. She swallowed a mouthful of Coke from the bottle she’d gotten from a vending machine on the floor below her. The carbonation burned her throat but soothed her nausea, so she figured it was a fair trade.

A coughing fit almost brought the soda back up. She kept it down and rode out the spell. When she was done, she tottered to the bathroom and grabbed a tissue to wipe her bloody mouth.

She regarded herself in the mirror. Dark circles under her red-rimmed eyes. Skin that was too pale. Short hair that looked matted and needed a good washing.

She didn’t care. She would not give up now. Cancer might beat her in the end, but she was going down fighting. Her team needed her to succeed. Austin needed her to succeed.

She went back to the small desk that sat down. Glaring at her computer screen, she went back to work. No rest for the weary – or was that the wicked?

Either way, she wasn’t giving up.
